At this Reef Cousteau conducted his famous Conshelf II Underwater Living experiments. 5 of his men spent time underwater for more than a month. Now we can still see the remains of his 'village' and we can dive to the underwater Conshelf, which is covered in coral by now. We can see the remains of shark cages and other equipment Cousteau and his man used.

Sha'ab Rumi Reef is at many points a very shallow Reef. On all its sites though, it drops to 600 meter, the perfect circumstances for great wall dives. There is often a strong current in the south and in the north divers can find the Blue Belle wreck, covered in coral.

Many species of sharks can be seen here, including the grey reef shark, silvertips and silky sharks. From November till April this is one of the best places in the Red See to spot hammerheads. There are divers which have seen schools of more than 50. It also has many smaller fish like schools of barracuda and trevally. And of course the many coral fish that feed off the coral. Because of the clear visibility, the clean water and the abundant sea life and coral, many researcher like this place as well and come here to study.
